Artists and Production

Emily Haight - Gretel - Emily Haight (Soprano) is a native of Bothell and a recent graduate of Pacific Lutheran University. During her time at PLU she sang Emmie in Benjamin Britten’s Albert Herring, Liesgen in a staged performance of Bach’s Coffee Cantata, and the title role in Handel’s Semele. She served for two seasons as the soprano section leader and was often featured as a soloist with PLU’s premier choral ensemble, The Choir of the West. In the spring of 2010 she covered the role of Laurie for Vashon Opera’s production of The Tender Land, and is delighted to now return to be a part of Hansel and Gretel. Outside of the opera realm, she thoroughly enjoys performing in recital and chamber music settings, and has a keen interest in Early Music. While a student at PLU, Emily studied with Vashon’s own Holly Boaz.

Sorayah Surkatty - Hansel - Sorayah Surkatty (Mezzo-Soprano) recently graduated from Pacific Lutheran University with a degree in Vocal Performance. A native of Yakima, Washington, during her time at PLU, Sorayah was a member of Choir of the West and Piano Ensemble as well as the Opera Workshop. At PLU, her roles included Jeanette in The Full Monty, Athamas in Handel's Semele and Kim in Rocko's Postmodern Life. Additional roles include Joy in Rodgers' and Hammerstein's Cinderella. She is currently studying voice with Melissa Plagemann. Sorayah would like to thank her friends, roommates and family for their continued support.

Erin White - Sandman/Dew Fairy - Erin White (Soprano) is a California native who grew up in Kent, WA. She is in her third year at Pacific Lutheran University, where she is earning a Bachelor's degree in Vocal Performance and currently studies with Marlette Buchanan-Hall. Recent opera roles include Lauretta in Gianni Schicchi and Iris in Handel's Semele (both PLU Opera 2011). In fall 2011, she experienced a new side of the stage as Music Director in PLU's Night of Musical Theatre, an annual, student-led production that is highly anticipated by both the cast and community. Favorite musical theatre roles have included Georgia Hendricks in Kander and Ebb's Curtains, Hodel in Fiddler on the Roof, and Laurey Williams in Oklahoma. She can also be heard singing as a member of PLU's Choir of the West and in the campus's premiere female a'cappella group, HERmonic. In her spare time, she enjoys reading, writing, and photography.

Kaitlyn Morrell - Witch - Kaitlyn Morrell (Soprano), a new Portland resident, is thrilled to perform with Vashon Opera as the Witch in Hansel and Gretel. Kaitlyn received a Bachelor of Musical Arts and Bachelor of Arts in Communication from Pacific Lutheran University last winter. In addition to several recitals and musical theatre reviews, Kaitlyn’s previous roles include Iris in Semele, Suor Osmina in Suor Angelica, and Mrs. Wordsworth (cover) in Albert Herring.

Linda Lee - Pianist - Linda Lee is a graduate of the University of Southern California and continued her studies in solo and collaborative piano at the University of Michigan. In 2009, she played Little Red Riding Hood for Vashon Opera. She has been active with accompanying for local students and musicians, Drama Dock, Vashon Island Chorale and as rehearsal pianist and supertitle operator for Vashon Opera. She lives on Maury Island with her husband, two Icelandic Sheepdogs and two cats.
