Sung in Italian with English supertitles

It's one of opera's great mysteries why the opening night audience in Milan booed and hissed this work from one of Italy's greatest composers. It never happened again. The second performance was a triumph and the story of tragic love between a Japanese geisha and an American naval officer, featuring some of Puccini's most compelling music, has been a sure-fire hit ever since. Romantic soprano arias don't pull the heartstrings any stronger than when Butterfly sings hopefully of "one fine day" when Lt. Pinkerton will sail into the harbor, returning to his wife and child (Un bel di). The story of Madame Butterfly, a collision of East and West, honor and unrequited love, coupled with Puccini's emotionally-charged score, remains as fresh today as when it debuted a century ago.
